Description of registry

Gender dysphoria is the significant distress a person experiences when their body does not match their personal gender identity.

Psychiatry has a responsibility to investigate gender dysphoria, and this is done primarily through six centres to which patients should be referred. When the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment is initiated in order to make the person’s body more congruent with their gender identity and to correct the body as far as possible. Treatment is managed by endocrinologists; speech therapists; ear, nose and throat specialists; dermatologists (diathermists); and plastic surgeons. Psychological support is also provided during the process. After about two years of investigation and treatment, the person applies for permission for sex reassignment surgery and legal establishment of their new sex. Hormone therapy continues throughout the person’s life.

The aim of the quality registry is to examine and monitor the investigation of persons with gender dysphoria in the country

Note: Variable lists are updated on a regular basis and should therefore be seen as preliminary. For the latest version, please contact the registry.
